Sands China Donates MOP 970,000 to Scholarship and Fellowship Funds

Donations to six tertiary institutions to benefit 97 students

(Macao, Aug 25, 2016) – Continuing its annual tradition of supporting higher education in Macao, Sands China Ltd. donated MOP 970,000 in scholarships and fellowships to six Macao tertiary institutions Wednesday.

At a cheque presentation ceremony at the Sands China Ltd. offices, the company reiterated its support of local students and acknowledged the importance of higher education in nurturing Macao’s talent.

“Sands China is committed to investing in talent development, not just for our team members, but for Macao as a whole,” said Dr. Wilfred Wong, president of Sands China Ltd. “Our company is pleased to be working with higher education institutions to nurture talent – people who will contribute to Macao’s diversification and long-term prosperity as a world centre of tourism and leisure.”

Antonio Ramirez, the company’s senior vice president of human resources, said: “Supporting Macao’s students as they work toward higher education degrees remains an important initiative for Sands China. These students are tomorrow’s local community leaders, and we want to continue investing in Macao’s local talent. With today’s donation, our company’s total contribution toward scholarships and fellowships since 2006 is MOP 7.46 million, to the benefit of nearly 1,000 students to date.”

The scholarship and fellowship cheques were given to (names in no particular order) Registrar Prof. Ka-Veng Yuen from the University of Macau; Vice President Prof. Pang Chuan and Head of the Student Affairs Office Remus Wong from the Macau University of Science and Technology; Vice President Prof. Im Sio Kei and Head of the Academic Affairs Department Vivian Lei of the Macao Polytechnic Institute; Head of the Technical and Academic Support Division Antonio Chu of the Institute for Tourism Studies; Director of the Office for Student Affairs Teresa Loong from the University of Saint Joseph; and Director Prof. Oscar Chan of the Macau Institute of Management.

The cheques will be distributed among 97 students in support of their studies for the current academic year. The beneficiary students were chosen based on their academic performance and financial status during the previous academic year.
