Sands China Local Team Members Tour Hengqin New Area

Trip to Zhuhai provides example of mainland China’s economic development

(Macao, Sept. 29, 2016) – A group of local Sands China team members toured attractions in Zhuhai’s Hengqin New Area Monday, on a trip organised by Sands China Ltd.

The trip is part of Sands China’s efforts to help its team members, including some working for the company’s hotel partners, understand the opportunities and latest development going on in mainland China.

“As the largest operator of integrated resorts in Macao, Sands China ensures that its industry-leading services and other facilities meet the highest international standards,” said Sands China Ltd. President Dr. Wilfred Wong. “Backed by the mainland and faced with global challenges, Macao occupies a strategic position. Therefore, we hope our team members can keep themselves up to date with the latest developments in the mainland, and strive to understand the fundamentals of China’s development policies and prepare for the numerous opportunities brought about by its strategic initiatives, thereby contributing to Macao’s transformation into a world centre of tourism and leisure.”

The team members’ time in the special economic district across the border was aimed at helping them better understand the economic development in Hengqin, and included tours of the Zhuhai Shizimen Central Business District Showroom, where they learned about the overall development plan of Hengqin, and other large-scale projects such as China’s large MICE complex – the Zhuhai International Convention and Exhibition Centre; the Shizimen Central Business District, the only land-based link between Hong Kong, Macao and mainland China; and Hengqin’s theme park and resort.

One of the participating team members said: “This was my first time visiting this particular part of Zhuhai. I’ve been across the border to shop in Gongbei, but I actually had no idea that there was this level of development here in Hengqin. I think this level of development just across the border from us is not only good for Zhuhai, but it strengthens the attractiveness of Macao as a tourist destination as well, since it’s so close and easy to visit Hengqin once you’re on Cotai.”

Sands China plans to organise similar activities for its team members in the future, providing further opportunities for them to learn more about development in mainland China.
