Xi Opera "Pearl Pagoda"

The "Pearl Pagoda", popular in the theatre world for more than 60 years as one of the most representative classic plays of Xi Opera, has been well received and highly commended by the public. The industry and audiences have praised the show for its longevity as "the gift that keeps on giving."

Premiered in 1956, it was regarded as a successful example of theatre reform. In 1989, it won the first China Gold Record Award. In 2004, it was commercially performed in Singapore. In 2018, "Pearl Pagoda·Presenting the Pagoda" was unveiled at the Chinese Opera New Year Gala in China. Its success has played a crucial role in the development and dissemination of the Binbin tune, created by Wang Binbin, and the Mei School, created by Mei Lanzhen, two genres of Xi Opera.

The "Pearl Pagoda" tells the story of a young man, Fang Qing, who, facing family decline, is ridiculed after borrowing from his aunt. Poor as he is, he is all the more determined in adversity and by no means gives up his ambition. Eventually, he braves difficulties and wins the title of Zhuangyuan through hard work. In the end, Fang makes peace with his aunt and marries his elder female cousin Chen Cui'e.

Original Musical "The Orphan of Zhao"

The original musical "The Orphan of Zhao", produced by the Shanghai Xujun Culture & Arts Co., Ltd., is the first arts and culture event of the Sands China Performing Arts Program in 2024. It roots in the cross-cultural theatre context of East and West, focusing on traditional ethical values and modern individual expression. With a sterling line-up of acclaimed stage artists, the musical tells an epic story taking place during the Spring and Autumn period in China's history.

In the course of inheritance and change, the story of revenge dating back more than 2,600 years ago has become a globally renowned theatre classic characterized by philosophical discernment, in-depth insight into history and literary richness, and served as a fundamental and ceaseless questioning of the existence of human beings.

"The Orphan of Zhao" features the integration of an original musical art form with modern innovations, presenting the bonds between family and nation, between clan and individual, the paradoxes between mind and body, between emotions and reason, as well as the struggles between revenge and sacrifice, between will and destiny. In this way, the sublimity and eternity in the depths of human nature are demonstrated in the tragic story.

Cantonese Opera "The Fairy Tale of the White Snake"

Established in 1953, the Guangdong Cantonese Opera Institute (GCOI) is the largest and first-class performing arts group in the Cantonese Opera sector.

"The Fairy Tale of the White Snake" is one of the representatives of GCOI's newly produced Cantonese Opera. An innovation and development of the traditional play "The Legend of the White Snake", it has toured for over 200 performances since its launch in 2014, with tickets hard to come by wherever it has been. The movie of the same Chinese name released in 2019 broke the box office record of Chinese opera films in the history of Chinese cinema. In May 2023, it was awarded the "Outstanding Feature Film" prize at the 19th Huabiao Film Awards.

"The Fairy Tale of the White Snake" tells the story of Bai Suzhen, a white snake spirit with a thousand years of cultivation, who looks for her mortal love Xu Xian to renew their relationship, despite strong obstacles. After going through all kinds of trials and tribulations, Bai Suzhen ends up being locked up in the Leifeng Pagoda for a thousand years. Xu Xian, who repents after Bai Suzhen's life-saving and his life-and-death experience, takes care of their child, waiting for Bai Suzhen's return.
