Sands China Participates in World Hunger Day 2017

Team members support global hunger relief project, completing the Clean Plate Challenge a record 83,000 times

(Macao, May 28, 2017) Sands China Ltd. team members participated in the Clean Plate Challenge May 23-25, in support of World Hunger Day. It is the company’s fourth consecutive year supporting World Hunger Day, which is held annually on May 28 to raise public awareness about the problem of hunger and starvation worldwide.

Sands China’s three-day Clean the Plate Challenge asked team members at the company’s staff dining rooms to take only what they would eat and turn in a clean plate. Part of the Sands ECO360° global sustainability strategy, the Clean Plate Challenge has the goal of increasing team members’ awareness of living green and minimising food waste.

For this year’s event, team members were able to complete the Clean Plate Challenge a total of 83,000 times, reaching a new target for participation, up from last year’s target of 60,000.

And in the days leading up to the Clean Plate Challenge, team members had the chance to support the work of Oxfam in Macau by becoming donors and by purchasing rice packs, the funds from which will go toward supporting smallholder farmers. Team members were also able to donate dry foods to the Fuhong Society of Macau, to be given to families in need under the Happy Caring Plan charity programme of Fuhong’s Happy Market social enterprise. In addition, Fuhong held a charity sale for team members, selling products made by people with disabilities. Funds raised from the charity sale will go toward Fuhong’s operating expenses, helping them provide job opportunities to people with disabilities.

“I did the Clean the Plate Challenge last year, and this year was another good reminder for me to waste less and to remember how lucky I am to not have hunger as an issue in my life,” said one team member.

Mark McWhinnie, Sands China’s senior vice president of resort operations and development, said: “We really do have a fantastic group of team members who come together to support initiatives like this that benefit the community and society in general. The company is grateful to have team members that continue to show their commitment to sustainability and to their community year after year, and we’re proud to be a company that sees these values as essential aspects of our operations.”

Sands China’s participation in World Hunger Day is part of the ongoing efforts of the Sands ECO360° global sustainability strategy, which utilises measures like energy saving, resource recycling, conservation and community engagement. Sands ECO360° is designed to help minimise the company’s environmental impact and lead the way in sustainable building development and resort operations.
