100 paintings and photographs now displayed online

(Macao, Sept. 13, 2021) – Sponsored by The Londoner® Macao, Time Is On My Side – 2021 Greater Bay Area Young Artists Scheme competition has announced shortlisted entries for the preliminary round following a rigorous judging process. One hundred artworks, including 50 photographs and 50 paintings, have been selected as finalists. The artworks are being exhibited online on a WeChat mini program 'GBA 青年藝術家計劃' where the public can discover rising art talents in the Greater Bay Area.

The competition invited submissions from artists aged 18 to 45 from the Greater Bay Area in two categories, painting and photography. It received widespread interest, with submissions from nearly 100 artists from Hong Kong and Macao and around 500 from mainland China. A total of 415 photography works and 912 paintings were received.

The judging committee, consisting of six renowned art experts from mainland China, Macao, Hong Kong and overseas, held a video conference to select 50 shortlisted works in each category. The committee is led by Guan Huaibin, Dean of School of Intermedia Art of China Academy of Art. Other members include Hu Bin, Deputy Director of Art Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts; Song Zhenxi, well-known mainland curator; Dr. Wang Lan, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities and Arts of Macau University of Science and Technology; Ng Fong Chao, Curator of Macao Museum of Art; and Alexandra Grimmer, international curator.

Speaking after the shortlisting, Alexandra Grimmer said: "We have been very impressed with the quality of the artworks from these young contemporary artists, especially in the medium of photography. What is especially interesting is their approach to the concept of time in this fast-paced region."

One of the other judges, Song Zhenxi added: "The submitted works not only reflect their context, but also showcase the immense creativity of these young artists. From the artworks, we get a good look at up-and-coming young art talents in Macao, and the vibrant exchange of artistic ideas in the Greater Bay Area and the whole country."

The final judging process will take place after the opening of the online exhibition to determine 24 winners. The total cash prizes are over RMB 1.2 million (MOP 1.5 million), with three first prizes, four second prizes and five third prizes in each category. The prize presentation and exhibition opening ceremony will be held on Oct. 12, with the winning works then exhibited at The Londoner Macao.
