Hi-tech Remake of Classic Canto-opera 'Floral Princess' Completes Successful Run at The Venetian Theatre

Innovative 65th Anniversary version fuses tradition and technology

(Macao, Jul. 31, 2023) – Presented by Sands China Ltd., Floral Princess 65th Anniversary Macao 2023 successfully made its Macao debut at The Venetian Theatre July 28-30, with the three performances showcasing the beauty and cultural significance of Cantonese opera.

The special anniversary version was created by Utopia Cantonese Opera Workshop and pays tribute to the invincible trio in Canto-opera, namely Yam Kim Fai, Pak Suet Sin and Tong Tik Sang, and broadens the scope of original art production. Uniquely, the lead roles of Floral Princess and Consort Chow were played by a different mix of trans-generational actors at each performance. The show also goes beyond tradition by fusing art and technology: a grand mobile stage, projections, lighting, rearranged music and tailor-made Harmonic Canto-opera Audio (HCA) for magnificent brand-new contemporary visuals and theatre acoustics, together presenting new level of beauty and chic.

"Sands China was proud to present this innovative production to promote interest in and understanding of Cantonese Opera and to attract the younger generation to appreciate this item of intangible cultural heritage," said Dr. Wilfred Wong, president of Sands China Ltd. "It is especially important to preserve our art and cultural heritage in the face of a rapidly changing world; we hope that inspiring the audience to appreciate the beauty and value of our cultural tradition, while incorporating modern elements, can help safeguard our heritage for future generations."

As part of the Sands Performing Arts Program, Floral Princess 65th Anniversary Macao 2023 underscores the company's aspirations to utilise its world-class venues to stage nationally and internationally acclaimed shows and develop a diverse platform for performing arts projects in Macao. The program's upcoming performances this year include Vienna-based quartet Janoska Ensemble's unique interpretations of classical pieces, and the mesmerising dance drama, Poetic Dance: The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting.
