Collateral Exhibition of "Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2023", Behind the Forms: Aesthetics of Contemporary Art – Trio Exhibition by Lei Ieng Wai, Leong Chi Mou and Lai Sio Kit
Throughout history, artists around the world have created numerous art forms that are now considered classics. Today, artists convey unique humanistic and philosophical thoughts about their times through personal visual forms. These forms may stem from a particular logic, concept, hypothesis, or dataset. The artists from Macao, an ever-changing and culturally diverse society, have been exploring their perceptions of the city. This exhibition presents the sincere works of contemplative local painters Lei Ieng Wai, Lai Sio Kit, and Leong Chi Mou from recent years, under the themes of the lights of the age, urban texture, and faith in market values. The aim of the exhibition is to promote aesthetic concepts that are pertinent to the appreciation of contemporary art.

• Time: 11:00am – 7:00pm

Curator / Kitman Leong
  • Artist and curator Kitman Leong holds a PhD in Fine Arts from the Chinese National Academy of Arts, and is currently an assistant professor of fine arts for the Faculty of Humanities and Arts at Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.), where she also serves as a postgraduate and doctoral supervisor.
  • Over the years, Leong has been engaged in the creative process through traditional Chinese painting, including Gongbi style, art education, curating exhibitions, and organising artistic projects, as well as by hosting lectures and training courses. She excels at exploring the evolution of aesthetics in art from a stylistic approach. Her representative dissertation, "On Recognition of Chui Yun Visuals as Paintings," focuses on Gongbi Zhongcai (meticulous brushwork and heavy colours). Her work is held in both public and private collections, including by the Macao Museum of Art, other entities, and individuals. In 2022, she presented a representative solo exhibition at UNESCO Centre of Macau titled Chui Yun Visual Illusions: Exhibition of Works by Leong Kit Man.
  • Leong is a member of the Chinese Artists Association and is director of the Macau Artist Society and the Yu Un Chinese Calligraphers and Painters Association of Macao. She is also vice president of the Macau Youth Art Association.
Artist – Lei Ieng Wai

About Artist:

  • Full-time artist. Graduated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts with a Master's and Bachelor's degree in oil painting.
  • His works have been exhibited in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, the USA, France and Portugal. His solo exhibitions include "Steal Into," "Emptiness," "Echo," "Light," "Dimensional Sequence," "Seeing the Invisible," "Subjunctive Mood" and "Time Spectrum."
  • Vice President of the Macau Youth Art Association.

Artwork Concept:

The work presents a sense of virtual reality prevailing in contemporary society. Virtual elements can be found everywhere in our lives, and with real-life objects being replaced by digital data, the distinction between reality and virtuality has become increasingly blurred. Lei Ieng Wai tried to construct the rhythmic dynamics of this virtual dimension with an artificial spectrum and use repeated patterns to create a mood of monotony and meaninglessness, which reflects the current way of life.
Artist – Leong Chi Mou

About Artist:

  • Full-time artist. Graduated from the Macao Polytechnic Institute (now Macao Polytechnic University) with a Bachelor's degree in oil painting. Founder of "CHI-MOU ESTUDIO."
  • Leong learned Chinese painting techniques without guidance or rules in his childhood. He later explored different art media and techniques from both the West and the East.
  • Member of the Macau Artist Society and the Macau Youth Art Association.

Artwork Concept:

My works are mainly inspired by my observations of people's consumption habits. They drove me to contemplate the relationship between art, consumption and value.
Artist – Lai Sio Kit

About Artist:

  • Graduated with a Master's and Bachelor's degree in oil painting from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China. His works have been exhibited in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Portugal, the USA and Singapore. He has held over 17 solo exhibitions including: "Splashing," "Splashing Brilliance," "Eternity in an Hour," "Single Moment," "At the point of time," "As Time Goes by," "Elapse," "From Above," and "The Secret Garden."
  • Member of the Chinese Artists Association; vice-chairman of the Macau Artist Society; president of the Macau Art Master Association; and director of the Macau Youth Art Association.

Artwork Concept:

Lai Sio Kit has been paying attention to the city and the small town where he grew up during his creative process. Moss is easy to grow in the humid climate and it darkens after being sun-dried, forming traces on the coast lines of the city. Time is a conceptual word without substance; in his work, he seeks to describe time in a visual way through painting. The traces of his paintings capture a state, and that state is exactly a period of time that carries a sense of place.
