Coastal Fantasia: King Lobster’s Vacation in Macao
To further enrich the travel experience of locals and tourists in Macao, and to continuously develop new tourism products to attract domestic and international visitors, showcasing Macao's multicultural charm as the "Cultural City of East Asia," Sands China has partnered with globally acclaimed British contemporary pop artist Philip Colbert to launch a new marine cultural tourism project named "Coastal Fantasia: the Lobster King’s Vacation in Macao" between 15th January and 16th March 2025. This project will introduce a brand-new giant inflatable installation of the “Lobster Submarine” at the waterfront of the Macao Science Center, along with the display of four thematic art sculptures along the shore area, free for pubic visitation. Through the creation of this landmark, Sands China hopes to encourage the public to appreciate Macao’s unique coastline scenery.
At the same time, to further deepen the connection between the artist and Macao, the Lobster King IP will be toured in various locations in Macao, including Sands China’s own property of Venetian Macao Hotel, where a giant “Lobster Flamingo” will be floating in the waters of the outdoor lagoon, kick-starting an enjoyable vacation at the Cotai Strip.

Lobster Flamingo
Lobster Flamingo features Colbert’s iconic Lobster King floating in a bright pink flamingo life ring at the Venetian Macao Outdoor Lagoon, enjoying the mesmerizing scenery of the Cotai Strip during the Lunar New Year period. With a playful pop art style, Colbert brings his lobster character on holiday to Macao, turning the space into a fun, laid-back vacation scene.
Lobster Submarine, 2024
Lobster Submarine features Colbert’s iconic lobster piloting a bright yellow submarine, paying homage to The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine. With bold colours and oversized forms, this artwork blends Colbert’s playful style with classic pop art and 60s British nostalgia, bringing his retro-futuristic world to Macao. This art piece echoes with the giant art inflatable installation currently located at the Macao Science Centre Waterfront.

Lobster Firecracker (Macao Edition), 2024
Lobster Firecracker (Macao Edition) is a giant stainless-steel sculpture specially created by Philip Colbert for the Iec Long Firecracker Factory. At 4 meters height and wearing the Lobster King’s signature egg suit, this sculpture acts as the guardian of the venue by holding a giant firecracker, sending the best wishes to all citizens and tourists during the festive season of Lunar New year.
Sitting Lobster Mushroom, 2024
In this artwork, Colbert’s lobster lounges leisurely in a mushroom costume. Colbert's choice of the mushroom costume for his lobster character draws on the mushroom's rich symbolic history in both popular culture and nature. Mushrooms, often associated with magic and transformation, serve as a metaphor for the hidden wonders of the natural world. They evoke a sense of enchantment and curiosity, bridging the gap between the mundane and the fantastical. In Colbert’s work, the mushroom becomes a playful emblem of nature’s creativity and resilience, inviting viewers to appreciate the often-overlooked marvels of the environment.

Philip Colbert
Born in Scotland and living and working in London, Colbert is often referred to as the “godson of Andy Warhol”. Colbert has created a global following for his cartoon lobster persona and his masterful hyper-pop history paintings. His work powerfully explores the patterns of contemporary digital culture and its relationship to a deeper art historical dialogue. “I became an artist when I became a Lobster,” says Colbert.
After graduating with an MA in Philosophy from St. Andrews University, Colbert’s work has received international acclaim in museums and galleries worldwide for his energetic new approach to painting and pop theory. Following on from early Pop painters such as Richard Hamilton, Roy Lichtenstein and James Rosenquist, Colbert’s paintings cross high art themes from old master paintings and contemporary art theory with everyday symbols of mass contemporary culture, all narrated through the eyes of Colbert’s cartoon Lobster alter ego. He has been championed as a contemporary pop master by art world figures such as Charles Saatchi & Simon De Pury.
Since 2014, Colbert has had more than 50 solo exhibitions worldwide. Between 2023-2024, he frequently appeared in Asia for solo exhibitions, including China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tokyo, Singapore and Seoul. For the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, the pop artist held a public exhibition featuring his giant sculptures at Station F.
