Classic Huangmei Opera ‘The Woman of Huizhou’ and
‘The Stories of Huizhou’ to Grace The Venetian Theatre on May 23 and 25

Sands China continuously promotes cultural stories of National significance to the rest of the world

(Macao, May 9, 2025) – As part of the “5th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Chinese Theatre Cultural Festival” and the “Anhui Huangmei Opera Culture Week in Macao”, Sands China Performing Arts Programme will present two Classic Original Huangmei Operas – ‘The Woman of Huizhou’ and ‘The Stories of Huizhou’ at The Venetian® Macao’s The Venetian Theatre on May 23 and 25 respectively. This marks the first time that the national intangible cultural heritage of Huangmei Opera will be performed in Macao with a full-scale repertoire that will mesmerise the audience with an artistic experience, transcending through time and space. Tickets are currently on sale via Cotai Ticketing, Macau Ticket and Damai.

Supported by the China National Arts Fund, staged by Anhui Zaifen Huangmei Opera Theatre and Anqing Normal University School of Huangmei Opera, The Woman of Huizhou and The Stories of Huizhou both star Han Zaifen, legendary performer and representative heir of the intangible cultural heritage of Huangmei Opera, who has won multiple prestigious awards such as twice the China Theatre Plum Blossom Award, the Wenhua Performance Award, between others.

After 20 years of performances, The Woman of Huizhou has become a long-standing classic that portrays the fate of a Huizhou woman through four acts – Marriage, Longing, Lament and Return. The audience will be enthralled by the poetic presentation that adopts the aesthetics of a minimalist opera.

The Stories of Huizhou is a creation where artistic innovation meets traditional Huangmei Opera. Set in late Qing Dynasty Huizhou, it follows the tumultuous life of Shu Xiang, who went from being a devoted wife to becoming a fugitive. Han’s delicate performance adds depth to expressing the process of a woman’s self-awakening, which will resonate strongly with the audience.

Under the patronage of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao SAR Government, the 5th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Chinese Theatre Cultural Festival is hosted by the China Theatre Association, Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, West Kowloon Cultural District Authority of Hong Kong SAR, the Guangdong Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and; co-hosted by the Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao Greater Bay Area Chinese Opera Association; organised by the Chinese Theatre Association of Macao, and Macao and Luso Cultural Group; with Sands China Ltd. as one of the co-organisers.

As the co-organiser of the festival, Sands China hopes to leverage on Macao’s unique blend of diverse cultures to telling valuable China stories to a wider audience. Launched by Sands China in 2023 to promote cultural exchange, the Sands China Performing Arts Programme aims to broaden the scope of performing arts in Macao by introducing and promoting premier national, local, and overseas projects. The programme aligns with the Macao SAR Government’s vision for the integrated tourism and leisure industry, leveraging the city’s role as a platform for international exchange while promoting its global reputation as both a City of Performing Arts and Culture City of East Asia.
