Sands China Donates Solar Street Lamps to Guizhou's Congjiang County
Part of company’s mainland poverty alleviation work
(Macao, September 29, 2019) – Sands China Ltd. has completed an ambitious solar street lamp project in Guizhou's Congjiang County, as part of the company’s support of the central government’s and Macao SAR government’s call for targeted poverty alleviation in mainland China.
A total of 560 solar-powered street lamps were installed across five Congjiang villages, with the six-month project requiring MOP 1.6 million to accomplish.
A donation ceremony was held Sept. 26 at Congjiang’s Gaowu village, attended by Chen Jianhua, coordinator of the poverty alleviation programme of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao Special Administrative Region; Wang Rui, vice secretary of the People’s Government of Congjiang County; Liu Weinan, first secretary of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade in Congjiang County’s Guping and Gaowu villages; and Julian Chow, senior vice president of special projects, product strategy and development for Venetian Macau Limited.
“Sands China is very appreciative of this opportunity to continue contributing to the poverty relief work in Congjiang, and we are grateful to see participation from our company’s various departments,” said Dr. Wilfred Wong, president of Sands China Ltd. “We are very proud of this impactful initiative as part of our corporate social responsibility work. It has brought light to thousands of residents, providing a significant improvement to their daily lives. It is a way for us to extend our care and love to the Congjiang community, and we are grateful to the China Liaison Office for its guidance on this meaningful project to light up Congjiang.”
In response to the government’s call, Sands China was the first integrated resort operator in Macao to purchase goods from the impoverished county. Since last year, shipments have included rice, chili sauce, mineral water, mandarin oranges and Congjiang oranges. And in June this year, a group of Sands Cares Ambassadors visited families in Congjiang as part of the company’s ongoing poverty relief efforts in the county.
