Sands China Volunteers Visit Elderly to Celebrate Chinese New Year
(Macao, Jan. 21, 2025) – Over 220 Sands China volunteers, comprising Sands Cares Ambassadors, company executives, and other team members, visited the elderly for Chinese New Year at Seac Pai Van Public Housing in Coloane and Edifício Iat Seng Public Housing in Taipa Tuesday – achieving the highest participation numbers since the initiative began in 2008.
Sands China has co-organised this annual initiative with Peng On Tung for 16 consecutive years, where team members visit the homes of nearly 1,000 service users ahead of the Chinese New Year. During the Tuesday’s event, the service project saw the volunteers visit around 150 elderly residents to share the warmth of the festive season with them. The residents are all users of the Peng On Tung Tele-Assistance programme organised by the General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macau (UGAMM). With cleaning supplies in hand, the volunteers cleaned and tidied the homes to usher in the upcoming Year of the Snake.
Since 2010, Sands China has been a supporter of the Peng On Tung Tele-Assistance programme, having so far donated MOP 3.42 million – which has helped over 27,500 elderly people to date. The funds help people with financial difficulties use the service and also help the programme develop more value-added services.
Dr. Wilfred Wong, executive vice chairman of Sands China Ltd., said: “Caring about the welfare and happiness of the elderly is a virtue in Chinese culture. In the lead up to the Chinese New Year, Sands China is pleased to host this annual visit to send our festive blessings to Peng On Tung users. We have organised this New Year’s visit for 16 consecutive years, making it a tradition for Sands China, as it demonstrates our company’s commitment to fulfilling corporate social responsibility and serving the local community with our volunteers. We extend our sincere gratitude to the volunteers from UGAMM for their support and to our team members who joined the visit and provided the elderly with household maintenance, cleaning and haircutting services, sharing care to individuals in need. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with local NGOs, enhancing the harmony in our community and contributing to the government’s vision of building a ‘Happy Macao.’”
Accompanied by Sands China’s executives, Leong Heng Kao, president of the supervisory committee of UGAMM, was also invited to join the event. He said: “Our gratitude goes to Sands China for their continued support to our Peng On Tung service over the years. With their generous donations, we have launched multiple services and provided subsidies to users with economic difficulties, in an effort to spread warmth in the local community. We extend our gratitude to the Sands Cares Ambassadors for their unconditional love and care to the elderly, especially during the annual New Year’s visit.”
During the visit, the volunteers delivered Chinese New Year gift packs containing useful items like noodles, biscuits, cleaning supplies, and detergent – purchased by Sands China through Fuhong Society of Macau and prepared by persons with disabilities.
The visit is one of the annual initiatives of the Sands Cares Ambassador programme. Launched in August 2009, it was the first volunteer programme established by an integrated resort operator in Macao. Its membership now counts more than 3,600 volunteers from across all Sands China properties. The programme gives team members a platform for serving the local community by organising various community activities and engaging in volunteer services – thereby conveying love and care to local disadvantaged groups, contributing to local social development, and helping establish a harmonious and inclusive community.
The Sands Cares Ambassador programme and other community initiatives are part of the Sands Cares global corporate citizenship programme.
