Badminton fever returns to Macao as international top players compete

(Macao, July 2, 2025) – The Sands China Ltd. Macau Open Badminton tournament is returning July 29-August 3, to be held at the Macao East Asian Games Dome after its successful debut last year, with the support of the Sports Bureau of the Macao SAR Government. Co-organised by Sands China Ltd. and the Badminton Federation of Macau (BFM) for the second consecutive year, the tournament offers early-bird ticket discounts to local residents to promote sports in the community.

An event of the HSBC BWF World Tour Super 300, the 2025 Macau Open will comprise five events: Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. The total prize money for this year’s tournament has been increased to US$370,000 (approximately MOP 3 million).

The Sands China Ltd. Macau Open Badminton 2025 tournament is sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation and sponsored by Felet International Holdings, who is providing the equipment. The competition’s semi-finals and finals will be live-streamed online on the Badminton World Federation’s YouTube channel, “BWF TV,” allowing badminton enthusiasts worldwide to witness this exciting tournament and the exceptional skills on display in Macao.

Sands China is the first integrated resort operator to jointly organise the Macau Open, in alignment with the company's full support of ‘tourism + sports’ cross-sector integration and corporate social responsibility. The company will host related community events, inviting participants from the past year’s BFM competitions and students from local tertiary institutions and primary and secondary schools, to enjoy the Macau Open badminton tournament. Local athletes with disabilities will have the opportunity to closely interact with Cai Yun, a former professional player from China’s national badminton team, promoting social inclusion within the community.

In addition, with the integrated development of Hengqin and Macao, Sands China will invite participants of the 2025 Hengqin-Macau Cup badminton mixed team tournament to attend the event, fostering a sports and cultural exchange platform between the two regions.

Dr. Wilfred Wong, executive vice chairman of Sands China Ltd., said: “The highly-anticipated Sands China Ltd. Macau Open Badminton tournament is returning this July, and we are honoured to once again co-organise the event with the Badminton Federation of Macau.  As the 2025 Macau Open will be held in summertime, we hope to attract more teenagers to see this world-class badminton tournament during their summer vacation. Also, we aim to elevate the synergy of ‘tourism + sports’ to new heights by building on the success of our first cooperation last year. In addition, this year’s tournament has attracted 442 elite badminton players from 29 nations and regions around the world, making it a skills exchange platform for global players. Macao is hosting several sports spectaculars this year, I believe it will not only help enhance Macao’s international influence on the sports stage, but also promote professional local sports and socioeconomic development. I would like to express my gratitude to the BFM for their collaboration, and to the Sports Bureau of the Macao SAR Government for their continuous support.”

Kong Tat Choi, president of the Badminton Federation of Macau, said: “We would like to express our gratitude to the Badminton World Federation for their continued endorsement in sanctioning the event and the full support of the Sports Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, Sands China, and Felet. This international high-level tournament is not only a spectacular sports competition that helps Macao’s badminton players achieve high standards, but also supports Macao’s goal of becoming a ‘City of Sports’ by deepening the cross-border integration of ‘sports + tourism’ and promoting the economic diversification of the Macao SAR government.

“Hosted in a ‘City of Sports,’ this event will further optimise the arena’s facilities and inject interactive elements, allowing fans to immerse themselves in the excitement of badminton and enriching Macao’s profile as a world centre of tourism and leisure. For six exciting days, we will present this tournament and Macao’s diverse vitality to a global audience through multiple online platforms, in a bid to attract more international tourists and further enhance Macao’s international influence. We are eagerly looking forward to working with everyone to create a successful tournament, polishing Macao’s ‘golden business card’ as an international metropolis.”

Following the cross-sector collaboration of “tourism + sports” in 2024, this year’s tournament once again surpassed the record that was set last year by receiving applications from 442 players from 29 nations and regions around the world, with 269 qualifying. The line-up includes  China’s gold-medal Olympian Chen Yufei and Chen Qingchen; returning player Ng Ka Long Angus from Hong Kong; Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani from Indonesia, who are ranked world no. 8 in men’s doubles; Ren Xiangyu, a Chinese national team player who has won multiple titles in Super Series in recent years; Danish players Jesper Toft and Amalie Magelund who first joined the tournament and are ranked world no. 8 in mixed doubles; and Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei from Malaysia who are ranked world no. 4 in mixed doubles and World Tour Finals 2024 first runner-up.
