Sands China Ltd. Macau Open Badminton 2025 Tournament Crowns Winners

Co-organised by Sands China Ltd. and the Badminton Federation of Macau

(Macao, Aug. 3, 2025)–
The winners of the Sands China Ltd. Macau Open Badminton 2025 tournament took to the podium Sunday to receive their medals, closing out six days of exciting matches in five events: Women’s Singles, Men’s Singles, Women’s Doubles, Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles.

Co-organised by Sands China Ltd. and the Badminton Federation of Macau (BFM) for the second consecutive year, the tournament was held at the Macao East Asian Games Dome July 29-Aug. 3, with the support of the Sports Bureau of the Macao SAR Government. The semi-finals and finals were live-streamed on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) YouTube channel, giving badminton fans around the world a chance to witness the exhilaration in Macao.

The Macau Open Badminton Championships is an event of the HSBC BWF World Tour Super 300, and has been held as an annual competition since 2006. The total prize money for this year’s tournament increased from US$210,000 (approximately MOP 1.68 million) last year to US$370,000 (approximately MOP 3 million).

The tournament received its highest number of entries again this year, surpassing last year’s record. A total of 442 players from 29 countries and regions submitted entries for the Macau Open 2025, with 269 qualifying. The line-up included China’s gold-medal Olympians Chen Yufei and Chen Qingchen; 2024 Macau Open men’s singles champion Angus Ng Ka Long from Hong Kong; Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani from Indonesia, ranked world no. 8 in men’s doubles; Ren Xiangyu, a Chinese national team player who has won multiple titles in Super Series in recent years; and Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei from Malaysia, the World Tour Finals 2024 first runner-up, ranked world no. 4 in mixed doubles. Macao players were represented in all five tournament events; the six players who competed were Pui Pang Fong, Leong Iok Chong, Vong Kok Weng, Ng Weng Chi, Pui Chi Wa, and Chan Hao Wai.

Sands China engaged local community groups with the Sands Cares Presents: Up Close and Personal with Badminton Legend event July 29 at the Macau University of Science and Technology’s gymnasium, in cooperation with BFM. It provided an opportunity for community members with physical and mental challenges to benefit from the tournament, promoting social inclusion. The community event also supports the major sports extravaganza coming to Macao in November – The 15th National Games, the 12th National Games for People with Disabilities, and the 9th Special Olympics Games – to be held in Guangdong province, Hong Kong, and Macao for the first time.

At the Sands Cares event, former China national badminton team player Cai Yun shared insights on his path to victory as an Olympic gold medallist, and the difficulties faced and overcome along the way, with more than 100 members of the Macau Special Olympics, the Macau Deaf Association, and the Macau Association of Support for the Disabled. Pun Weng Kun, the head of the preparatory office for the Macao leg of the three upcoming national Games, joined the sharing session as well to talk about the exciting events that will be held during the Games. Afterward, Cai joined Goh V Shem, Olympic Games silver medallist in men’s doubles from Malaysia, to demonstrate basic badminton techniques and give technical guidance to the attendees; the pair then took part in a fun competition with the participants to help them practice their skills.

Rooted in the city of Macao that it calls home, Sands China’s support of the Macau Open badminton tournament is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility efforts and its support of ‘tourism + sport.’ Sands China has sponsored and organised various sporting events over the years and has invited international sports stars to attend tennis and basketball invitationals and training camps, Golf Day and other events, encouraging the public to participate in sports while attracting tourists and athletes from overseas to visit Macao and experience its charm.
