Sands China Launches New Internship Training Programme for Recent Uni Grads

Introduces 12 different training courses to enhance graduates' competitive advantage

(Macao, Sept. 22, 2020) – Sands China Ltd. launched its new Level Up Programme Thursday with a ceremony at The Parisian Macao, geared at providing career training for the company's interns.

As the largest integrated resort operator in Macao, Sands China has been committed to nurturing local talent. In support of the internship programme organised by the Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL), Sands China has been providing recent university graduates with three-month internships at Sands China properties, helping them gain work experience in one of 30 departments, ranging from frontline operations to administrative departments.

Sands China has recruited the highest number of interns among Macao's integrated resort operators – extending offers to around 200 candidates.

In order to provide them with further support, Sands China has created a tailor-made Level Up Programme – featuring 12 different training courses aimed at helping participants prepare for their future career paths by developing personal strengths and improving competitiveness.

Dr. Wilfred Wong, president of Sands China Ltd., said: "As the largest operator of integrated resorts in Macao, Sands China is taking proactive measures to make essential contributions to Macao's development as an international talent cultivation base and a world centre of tourism and leisure. An initiative like this new Level Up Programme for university graduates can help equip participants with an important set of knowledge and skills that can prove valuable to them in their career paths."

Director of the Labour Affairs Bureau Wong Chi Hong said: "As the pandemic has affected the local employment market, we are glad to see Sands China supporting the government's internship programme. They have also developed different training courses to enrich recent graduates' experience and competitiveness, thereby helping them better prepare for creating a successful career path in the future."

With the slogan Develop a Competitive Advantage for Your Careers, the ceremony was immediately followed by the first of 12 Level Up training courses that offer participants perspectives on career development. Understanding Yourself and Others with DISC examines participants' personality traits with a behaviour assessment tool developed by psychologists, enabling them to select the career path that best suits their interests and personalities. Another upcoming course, Developing Innovative Thinking, offers participants tools to foster creativity and innovative thinking – two highly important and successful characteristics of entrepreneurs – to help them keep abreast of the times in the fast-moving business world.

Guests at Thursday's launch ceremony included Wong Chi Hong; Chan Un Tong, deputy director of DSAL; Ho King Lun, member of the NPC, president of the Industry and Commerce Association of Macau, and director of KNJ (Investment) Limited; Anthony Zhou, project development director of the School of Graduate Studies of the Macau University of Science and Technology; Jacinta Ho, advisory board member of the Bosco Youth Service Network; Vincent Yp Weng Keong, chief executive officer of the Bosco Youth Service Network; Dr. Wilfred Wong; Wen Hongyan, senior vice president of human resources for Sands China Ltd.; and Sam Chongnin, vice president of corporate communications and community affairs for Sands China Ltd.

The ceremony featured special guest Kevin Ho King Lun, a local entrepreneur who was invited to present a seminar entitled Dare to Dream, Dare to Innovate – Career Sharing Session, as the first training course of the programme. Ho shared his insights on how members of the younger generation can prepare themselves for their career paths, such as by weighing the pros and cons of working for a company versus starting their own businesses. He also shared his advice for young entrepreneurs, like the importance of persistence and effort in order to take advantage of opportunities for success.

Ho said: "Opportunities are available everywhere in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Whether it is starting a business or getting a job, young people should work hard to foster knowledge and skills to grow and further themselves. I am thrilled to be here today to share my relevant experience, and I anticipate seeing Macao's young people making significant contributions to the city's economy in the future."

In addition, Thursday's programme allowed interns to enhance their competitive advantages and explore career paths with a sharing session led by a representative from M.U.S.T. and participants from the Sands China Integrated Resort Business Analyst Development Programme – an 18-month programme designed collaboratively by M.U.S.T. and Sands China for graduates with relevant backgrounds, as well as for the company’s team members, to work as analysts.

Sands China has been collaborating with local universities and organisations to accelerate the cultivation of local talent through a variety of programmes for local university students and graduates. These programmes, such as the Boosting Your Resilience at Work programme provided by the Bosco Youth Service Network, allow participants to be mentored by experienced professionals, accumulating valuable integrated resort work experience and gaining professional skills and knowledge for their future careers. These and other initiatives by Sands China are an effort to support diversification and talent development in Macao and the city's development as a world centre of tourism and leisure.
