Macao Residents Studying in Wuhan Learn About Career Development Opportunities with Sands China

Briefing session helps attract Macao locals studying abroad to return to work in Macao

(
Macao, April 30, 2019) – Sands China Ltd. recently held a career development briefing session in Wuhan, targeted at Macao residents who attend university in Hubei province’s capital city.

Held March 30 and 31 at Wuhan University, the session sought to cater to the needs of Macao students studying in the mainland. It provided career development information and helped the students explore the wide range of career opportunities available to them in Macao after graduation.

With a few hundred Macao locals currently studying in Wuhan, the event was organised in response to the Macao government’s local talent-building strategy and policy guidelines, as well as the recently-released Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Students at the briefing session learned more about the macroeconomic conditions of Macao, its integrated tourism and leisure industry, and Sands China’s corporate culture.

The career development briefing session was well-received, attracting students from Wuhan University and the Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

Wen Hongyan, Sands China’s senior vice president of human resources, said: “Macao has been developing rapidly, and the development of the Greater Bay Area is going to bring even more opportunities to the city. A career development briefing session like this helps deepen students’ understanding of Macao's development prospects, employment opportunities and our company. We hope this event can help attract Macao students studying abroad to return to work in Macao, thereby contributing to the city’s development into a world centre of tourism and leisure.”

At the event, Sands China showcased two of its career development programmes made especially for students: the Integrated Resort Internship Programme and the Career Experience Opportunities Programme (CEOP).

The Integrated Resort Internship Programme gives local university students opportunities to work full-time at Sands China properties on a short-term basis while fulfilling a portion of their degree requirements. As a result, they are able to gain a diversified mix of valuable work experience through Sands China’s successful integrated resort model – an exposure that is uncommon to find in a traditional hotel business model.

CEOP
gives local university students the advantage of gaining comprehensive and professional on-the-job training on a long-term yet flex-time basis. This allows them to give adequate focus to their university studies while they practice applying what they learn in the classroom to real-world integrated resort operations. Based on the number of training hours accumulated and their work performance, participants may be offered supervisory trainee positions upon graduation. With professional knowledge and skills acquired through CEOP, participants are more capable of adapting to the dynamic business operations of integrated resorts and more prepared for beginning their careers at Sands China.

Sands China has been working to cultivate local talent through a variety of programmes for university students and graduates. These programmes allow participants to be mentored by experienced professionals and learn about the latest trends in the local and international tourism industry. Participants accumulate valuable integrated resort work experience and gain professional skills and knowledge for their future careers. These and other initiatives by Sands China are an effort to support non-gaming diversification and talent development in Macao and the city’s development as a world centre of tourism and leisure.
