Sands China Supports Macau Holy House of Mercy’s Welfare Shop for Seventh Year in a Row
Volunteers deliver food hampers in preparation for Chinese New Year
(Macao, Feb. 2, 2019) – Nearly 70 Sands Cares Ambassadors helped distribute over 360 Chinese New Year food hampers to disadvantaged families Saturday, volunteering at Macau Holy House of Mercy’s Welfare Shop for the seventh straight year.
The event is one in a year-long series of celebratory activities leading up to the 10th anniversary of the Sands Cares Ambassador programme in August 2019, with the theme Spreading Love and Embracing Our Community.
The hampers contain staple items like rice, noodles, biscuits, canned food, cooking oil, toothpaste, shower gel and others. Sands China has also added a specially prepared New Year’s gift pack this year, containing dried foods like mushrooms, conch and scallops.
The Welfare Shop began monthly distribution of food and essentials in 2013 to help families with financial difficulties. The service has since helped several thousand households from disadvantaged neighbourhoods get relief from rising living costs.
Sands China has been a major sponsor of the programme since 2013, and has donated MOP 2 million to date, including this year’s donation of MOP 300,000.

Dr. Wong presented a cheque for MOP 300,000 Saturday to Macau Holy House of Mercy President António José de Freita, member of the Board of Trustees Bruno Nunes, and President of the Supervisory Committee José Ricardo das Neves. Chan Kam Meng, President of the Federation of Macau Workers Associations, and Leong Iok Va, President of the Supervisory Committee; Ng Sio Lai, president of the board of the General Union of the Neighbourhood Associations of Macau; Io Hong Meng, President of the Supervisory Committee; and Winnie Wong, vice president of corporate communications and community affairs for Venetian Macau Limited; were also in attendance.
The Sands Cares Ambassador programme was established in August 2009 to give Sands China team members an outlet for serving the local community by organising community activities and initiatives that work toward creating a better Macao. With membership of more than 3,300 volunteers from across all Sands China properties – Sands® Macao, The Venetian® Macao, The Plaza® Macao, Sands® Cotai Central and The Parisian Macao – the Sands Cares Ambassadors have contributed 100,000 hours of voluntary community service since the programme’s founding.
Sands China Ltd. considers initiatives like its support of Macau Holy House of Mercy’s Welfare Shop as central to its commitment toward social causes and community involvement; it is one of the many ways the company’s team of volunteers expresses its care and spreads warmth to vulnerable and less-advantaged groups in the Macao community.
